National Facilities

From 3rd to 5th of June, the German ACTRIS consortium (ACTRIS-D) convened for its annual meeting, hosted by the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). Over 50 participants from ACTRIS-D research institutions, universities, governmental agencies, and funding ministries gathered in Karlsruhe for three days of intensive scientific exchange and project coordination.

The first two days featured a rich program of presentations, showcasing ongoing ACTRIS-D activities and recent scientific advancements. Keynote talks by Prof. Thomas Leisner, Dr. Andreas Zahn, Prof. Peter Knippertz, Prof. Peer Nowak, and Prof. Corinna Hoose highlighted the central role of ACTRIS within KIT’s broader research landscape.
On the final day, participants visited the AIDA (Aerosol Interaction and Dynamics in the Atmosphere) facility of the Institute of Meteorology and Climate Research Atmospheric Aerosol Research (IMKAAF) at KIT Campus North. This facility is currently facing reconstruction to host the new atmospheric simulation chamber AIDAc², which will be labelled as ACTRIS exploratory facility and will offer access for trace gas, aerosol, cloud and process studies in a clean and cold environment. Attendees also learned more about the infrastructure development of the Topical Centre for Cloud In Situ Measurements (CIS), which is currently being built up at IMKAAF. In addition, they had the opportunity to visit IMKAAF’s dynamic loud chamber AIDAd and other atmospheric research labs.
In parallel with the site visits, a project evaluation was organized and hosted by the ACTRIS-D funding agency DLR Projektträger with representatives from all ACTRIS-D funding Federal Ministries (BMBFTR, BMUKN, and BMV). The international review panel included high-ranking experts, who took the opportunity for in-depth discussions with ACTRIS project PIs and provided valuable, constructive feedback.
