Participate in the national ACTRIS activities

If a national ACTRIS consortium is already existing in your country, the first step would be to get involved in their activities to get more familiar with the ACTRIS structure and to understand what ACTRIS is about.

Access ACTRIS National Facilities

ACTRIS Exploratory Platforms and selected Observational Platforms provide physical and virtual access to the facilities.

How to join ACTRIS ERIC

ACTRIS ERIC welcomes applications from countries or intergovernmental organizations to join as members, permanent observers or observers.

Countries within the European Union and EU Associated Countries can apply to become either members, permanent observers or observers of ACTRIS ERIC.  The key difference between a member and a permanent observer or observer is their participation in ACTRIS governance and decision-making. Permanent observers and observers do not have a voting right at the ACTRIS ERIC General Assembly. The observer status is limited to three years, with the possibility of two one-year extensions based on the General Assembly’s approval. Intergovernmental organizations can apply for an observer status.

Building a National ACTRIS Consortium

Representatives from interested national Research Performing Organizations, such as universities and research institutes, and research groups related to atmospheric science should interact with each other to form a coordinated national ACTRIS community. This collaboration should be formalized by the establishment of a National ACTRIS Consortium.

Appointing a National Contact Person

The next step is to appoint a representative of this community to act as the ACTRIS National Contact Person, whose role is to coordinate the activities of the consortium and act as a communication link between the consortium and the ACTRIS ERIC Head Office. A lot of ACTRIS information from the European to the national level is distributed through National Contact Persons.

Collaboration with Relevant Ministries

Towards formal participation in ACTRIS ERIC, the connections to relevant ministries and funding organizations should be established and a ministry level delegate identified. The representatives of engaging countries may be invited to the ACTRIS ERIC General Assembly as guests before official country membership takes place, to share information and support a seamless entry in ACTRIS ERIC.

Membership contribution

The membership contribution of a country in ACTRIS ERIC is calculated by the Head Office based on the size of the country’s economy and the number and type of proposed National Facilities. These membership contributions support ACTRIS operations including Topical Centres, the Data Centre and the Head Office.

Formal application

The formal process begins with a commitment to ACTRIS ERIC membership at the ministry level. Interested applicants should submit a written application to the ACTRIS ERIC Head Office addressed to the chair of the General Assembly, expressing their interest and outlining potential Research Performing Organizations and National Facilities, such as observational stations, simulation chambers, mobile platforms or laboratories, that could become part of ACTRIS.

General Assembly Decision

The ACTRIS ERIC General Assembly convenes twice a year, in spring and autumn, and will review and approve new membership applications. Once a country is officially accepted into ACTRIS ERIC, the related rights and obligations start immediately, including participation in decision-making, having to pay the membership fee, and being able to start the labelling process for its National Facilities.
