How to reach St Albans and Hatfield
Located about 35 km north of London, both St Albans and Hatfield are well accessible by car, train, or plane.
From Europe, book the Eurostar to London St Pancras International. Local trains to St Albans City Station and Hatfield Station depart from London St Pancras and London King’s Cross, respectively, several times per hour. Tickets for the local train can be purchased at ticket machines close to the turnstiles.
London is serviced by five major airports: Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted, Luton and City. The approximate travel times refer to public transport.
From Luton (30 min travel): Take the shuttle bus to Luton Airport Parkway. From there, it’s two stations to St Albans City station. From St Albans City you can take a bus so get to Hatfield.
If you are not travelling individually, it will be cheaper to take a taxi from Luton to St Albans. There is a single provider at the airport that charges £50. Other companies (for instance A1 Taxis +44 1727 866666) charge about £30.
From Stansted (1 h travel): There is a National Express coach service from Stansted to Hatfield every two hours. Other public transport connections will take a detour to London. Taxi from Stansted to Hatfield is about £50 and a bit more to St Albans.
From Heathrow (2 h travel): There is a variety of options. The most frequent connection is to take the Piccadilly Line to St King’s Cross and follow the train instructions above from there. A pricier option is to take the Heathrow Express to London Paddington and to get to King’s Cross from there. Taxis will be upward of £70.
From Gatwick (1.5 h travel): Gatwick Airport is directly connected to St Albans City by the Thameslink service to Bedford. If you want to go to Hatfield, change at St Pancras International and follow the train description above from there.
From City Airport (1.25 h travel): To St Albans, take the DLR to Stratford International. Get off at Canning Town and change into the Jubilee Line to Wembley Park. Get off at West Hampstead and walk about 5 min to West Hampstead Thameslink from where you can take any northbound Thameslink service to St Albans City.
To Hatfield, take the DLR to Bank Station. From there, change to the Northern Line to Edgware. Get off at Old Street and change into the Great Northern service to Welwyn Garden City.
