Travel directions
  • Flight: Airport Leipzig/Halle, preferably with connecting flights from Frankfurt, Munich or Düsseldorf. Leipzig is also very well connected by Intercity Express (ICE) trains from Frankfurt, Munich, and Berlin. Travel time from Berlin is approximately one hour. Thus, taking a flight to Berlin and continuing by train can be recommended as well (consider the transfer time between the airports, Tegel or Schönefeld, and the train station).
  • Local trains: See timetable. S5/S5X between Leipzig/Halle Airport and Leipzig city center every 30 min. You need to buy a 3-zone ticket (4.40 €) before entering the train. There is a ticket machine at the platform. Please be aware that these tickets are only valid for the local trains (S-Bahn). For intercity trains you will need a regular train ticket.
  • Taxi: from the airport to the city center or to the Science Park is about 45 €.
  • Public transportation: You will reach the Science Park from the main station (Hauptbahnhof) by tram No. 3 or 3E (every 10 min, see PDF time table, also for the way back).
  • There is a ticket machine at the platform. Please be aware that these tickets are only valid for the local trains (S-Bahn). For intercity trains you will need a regular train ticket. The taxi from the airport to the city center or to the Science Park is about 45 €.
  • You will reach the Science Park from the main station (Hauptbahnhof) by tram No. 3 or 3E (every 10 min, see time table, also for the way back). The tram station is in front of the main station and has four platforms. Please go to platform 2 (Gleis 2) and take the tram towards Taucha or Sommerfeld. Exit the tram at stop Permoser/Torgauer Straße after about 12 minutes (7 stops). Then, cross Torgauer Straße and follow Permoserstraße until you reach the entrance to the Wissenschaftspark (Science Park) on the left (about 5 min walk). The entrance to the Leipziger KUBUS is directly at the right side, just in front of the guard-house (do not pass the gate on Monday and Tuesday, see map). After the revolving entrance door, please go up the stairs to the right to Room 1A (don’t enter into the crowd in the foyer – there is another big event on Monday).
  • It is advisable to buy tram tickets before entering the tram. There are ticket machines at each platform. You will need a 1-zone ticket for zone 110. Single tickets are 2.50 €. A four-ride ticket is 9.60 €. You can also get a day ticket for 6.90 €, a weekly ticket for 23.70 €, or special day tickets for 2 to 5 persons. Don’t forget to validate the ticket when entering the tram (yellow boxes in the car). If you need advice, go to the LVB information center. It is located on the walkway between the main station (exit Westhalle) and the entrance to the city center at Nikolaistraße (close to the Park Hotel).

Accommodation We recommend that you book a hotel in the city center close to the main station very soon. We did not make any block reservations, since there are many nice locations available from which you can choose according to your personal taste (e.g., Motel One, Marriott, Novotel, Best Western etc.). At the time of the workshop, the complete city center will be dedicated to the Leipzig Christmas Market, which will open on 24 November 2015. Thus, you can enjoy the decorated, lively city in the evening, and you will have plenty of choices of restaurants, bars, and shops. But please make your hotel reservation as soon as possible! The Leipzig Christmas Market belongs to the most beautiful ones in Germany and there will be many tourists in the city during this time! Nevertheless, in case you prefer a hotel in walking distance to the meeting place, we suggest the Suite Hotel Leipzig at Permoserstraße 50 (10 min walk from the Science Park). It is two bus stops (bus No. 90) or 15 min walk from the tram station Permoser/Torgauer Straße (tram ticket is valid for changing to the bus).
Lunch and Workshop Dinner
Lunch is provided in the cafeteria of the Science Park. There are four different meals (prices of 4-7 €) as well as a salad bar and snacks available each day.
The social dinner is planned for Monday, 23 November, in order to give you time for enjoying the Christmas Market from Tuesday onwards. The dinner will take place at the Bayerischer Bahnhof, the oldest preserved head rail station in the world, built in 1842. Nowadays it’s a restaurant location and microbrewery, where, among others, the traditional Leipzig Gose beer is brewed. The dinner fee of 40 € includes warm and cold buffet (including vegetarian dishes), beer, wine and non-alcoholic beverages, coffee and tea.
